You know who isn’t as high on the list as you’d think"Football Outsiders’ SackSEER projection is back again. In their 2018 version Adrian Colbert Jersey White , this projection favored Marcus Davenport over Bradley Chubb. The year prior, they had a wide gap between Myles Garrett and Solomon Thomas. Here’s how SACKSEER is explained. They base SackSEER projections on, “a statistical analysis of the factors that have historically correlated to success as an NFL edge rusher.” Among the stats it measures:The edge rusher’s projected draft position. These projections use the rankings from ESPN’s Scouts, Inc.;An “explosion index” that measures the prospect’s scores in the 40-yard dash, the vertical leap, and the broad jump in pre-draft workouts; The prospect’s score on the three-cone drill;A metric called SRAM (“sack rate as modified”) which measures the prospect’s per-game sack productivity, but with adjustments for factors such as early entry in the NFL draft and position switches during college; The prospect’s college passes defensed divided by college games played; The number of medical redshirts the player either received or was eligible for. Here is their top four edge rushers from this years class.Brian Burns, Florida StateSackSEER Projection: 26.6 sacks through five seasonsScouts, Inc. overall ranking: No. 35Similar historical prospects: Jadeveon Clowney,Burns is far from powerful. We also haven’t seen him at his new weight, which is now up to 253 pounds. It’s interesting that Burns is number one on this list. I think he’ll be quite good at the next level.Josh Allen, KentuckySackSEER Projection: 26.3 sacks through five seasonsScouts, Inc. overall ranking: No. 3Similar historical prospects: Ryan KerriganYou know how I feel about Allen by now. I do like how they use some perspective here. Allen’s career and usage will be fascinating to watch to see how he turns out.Montez Sweat, Mississippi StateSackSEER Projection: 25.7 sacks through five seasonsScouts, Inc. overall ranking: No. 10Similar historical prospects: Bruce IrvinOn the field, Sweat is a tier below all of these guys. His athletic ability makes for an intriguing prospect, though.Nick BosaSackSEER Projection: 22.1 sacks through five seasonsScouts, Inc. overall ranking: No. 1Similar historical prospects: Brandon Graham“There’s no way in knowing whether he would have kept up that pace.” Bosa had a sack in six straight games. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that he would have kept his pace up. I do think some of the other critiques are fair. I also think this projection undermines Bosa’s technical ability, and overestimates the others athleticism. How would you rank these four? The San Francisco 49ers wrapped up the 2018 season and they have begun their work to prepare for 2019 free agency and the NFL draft. The coaches and scouts are back from a week in Mobile, Alabama at the Senior Bowl, but there is plenty more to be done as they get ready to build on a disappointing 2018 campaign. We’ll be breaking down plenty of what that means Malcolm Smith Jersey White , but in the meantime, we wanted to take a look back at the season that was for the 49ers.Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury sent things south, but there is plenty still to assess. We are going to take a look at every notable addition and provide a forum for grading how that signing, trade, or draft pick worked out.Tarvarius Moore, cornerbackHow acquired: Drafted in the third round (95th overall)The 49ers have spent two years overhauling their cornerback depth chart, and we still don’t quite know where things stand moving forward. Most of last season saw the 49ers starting Richard Sherman and Ahkello Witherspoon, but by season’s end, injury had moved Moore into the starting lineup.Moore was a third round pick the team was looking to convert from college safety to NFL cornerback. It’s not a simple process, and in fact, most of Moore’s rookie season was spent on special teams. He became a core special teamer until the team needed him to replace an injury Witherspoon in Week 15.The 49ers installed him at right cornerback, opposite Richard Sherman. He was shaky those three weeks, but we saw signs of a guy who is turning his physical traits into cornerback skills. He heads into the offseason competing with Witherspoon for a starting spot — pending any additions in free agency and the draft.25 third round picks ranked ahead of Moore in Pro Football Reference’s Approximate Value for the class, but factoring in the position change from college, he’s clearly a guy whose value will best be assessed in year two. Of course, that makes it all the more interesting that he’s competing with another former third round pick in Witherspoon. You can never have enough cornerbacks, but the loser of this competition drops to fourth cornerback off the bench after one of the nickel backs, K’Waun Williams or D.J. Reed. If Moore wins out, maybe we see a Witherspoon trade? If you can’t see the poll below, click here.
