DALLAS, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- "Fifty years passed. But it doesn't seem like 50 years ago at all. For me it's forever 1963. Everything is so vivid. It is as though it was yesterday," 79-year-old Dallas resident Pierce Allman told Xinhua.

Tyquan Lewis Jersey , then a local radio reporter, witnessed the assassination of President John F. Kennedy at Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas. He also encountered Lee Harvey Oswald, the alleged assassin.
At around 12: 20 p.m. that day, Allman, though not assigned to the Kennedy story

"I had admired him tremendously. I thought he was a gifted politician," he said. "The President and the First Lady in the United States are the closest things to royalty that we have.
"When they are extraordinarily attractive and when they have so much television exposure and so much publicity, it's just sort of natural that if you haven't seen them in person, you want to go over and see them."

Asked if that was an afterthought given the following events, the brooding man dismissed the idea and iterated: "I said the words. I don't know why I said the words. But I did say the words."
Allman stood near the intersection of the streets, facing the Texas School Book Depository from where later investigation found the shooter pulled the trigger on Kennedy. Thousands of people were already there to welcome the president's motorcade.
Finally they arrived. "The limo came to my right. I was probably 20 feet (about six meters) from them the closest. I was just struck by Jackie (Jacqueline Kennedy) who was closest to me on the left-hand side of the car and the president was on the other side. She had this marvelous smile and little wave. Actually

But shortly after the limo turned onto the Elm Street, the first gunshot rang out. "That was the sound you would never forget," said Allman, grown somber by the memory.

He continued: "The feeling was it might be a firecracker or maybe a backfire. I glanced up and on the fifth floor of the Depositary building. There was a double window open and three guys were hanging out of the window and they were looking up at the sixth floor window. I glanced up momentarily, but by then the car had gone on and then there was the second shot."
There were roughly two seconds between the first two shots, and a third shot came right after.
"On the second shot

I was about 40 feet (12.4 meters) from him at that time," Allman said. "But the third shot was a dead hit. I saw Kennedy toppling to his left. Jackie was screaming and she got out of her seat and stepped on the back seat. She was trying to reach across the back of the vehicle. What we found out later was she was trying to retrieve a piece of skull from her husband."
The limo paused momentarily after the third shot and then took off, according to Allman. "I saw the guy in the front seat was standing and looking up back to the sixth floor window of the Depository building."
That was what Allman saw and heard during the seconds-long event, from the first sight he saw of the president's limo to its disappearance.
He tried to capture his immediate reaction to the historic moment. "It is so unexpected and so sudden and so violent and so shocking. You sort of separate intellectually what you watch from what is happening."
"Intellectually from the second shot, I understood 'This is shooting. They are shooting at the president.' Emotionally

The crowds' reaction was the same as his, Allman said. They were confused at the first shot, before things turned chaotic and people scrambled for their lives after the second and the third shots. "I heard people shouting, screaming

MET THE ASSASSIN
Allman said his professional instinct as a journalist kicked in shortly after an initial moment of fluster. "I knew I had to get a phone. And the nearest phone was in the Depository building."
Allman rushed to the door of the depository building "two or three minutes after the third shot."
"At the steps to the depository building, there was a guy standing at the doorway. When I went in, I identified myself and said, 'Where is the phone?' And he jerked his head and said, 'There.'"
Allman rushed to the only phone in the lobby

He stayed at the building for around 30 minutes until the police arrived and cordoned off the area. "When I ran back to the station, the first thing I asked was 'Is the president dead?' and they said yes. And I did a brief radio and went to the control room. I didn't get home for three days and three nights."
But it was not until three weeks later that Allman realized the man he met at the doorway of the depository building was Oswald.
He said the secret service asked him to "talk about the guy at the doorway of the depository building."
